Case Study 3: P Square- Taste The Money (Testimony)

Case Study 3: P Square- Taste the Money (Testimony)

Genre/Style
This genre/style of this song is afrobeat. Afrobeat is predominantly originated in Africa where it has evolved mostly through Nigeria and Ghana and has now reached a massive audience overseas such as, the Caribbean (Jamaica, Barbados etc), U.S and Europe (UK, France etc). Afrobeat is very different to other musical genres because of its actual beat, pace, instruments used and its 'feel' to it. Afrobeats heavily bring a positive, energetic feel with a fast pace/tempo and their use versatile instruments (mainly percussion, keyboard, bass/electric guitar) that played smoothly along with the song. P-Square are one of the most popular nigerian artists/duo that have successfully produced afrobeat songs globally for many years now.

Synopsize the Video
This video is clearly  performance based. Its set in a mansion

Case Study 2: Missy Elliot- Gossip Folks

Synopsize the Video: Performance Based

The video is mainly a performance based video because it doesn't have a noticeable message behind the video which is political or something horrendous or great that happened at that time when the video was published. There are a lot of dancers that Missy Elliott has used in her videos (she is known to have a lot of choreography in her videos). The dance style are always street/break/hip hop because it compliments the song/lyrics as she is a hip hop artist. However, she does challenge the stereotype hip hop videos (that are mainly found in male hip hop artist) of having cars, dollars and weapons. She doesn't use the typical kind of elements that you see in a hip hop video, she specifically brings the 'fun' in hip hop which could be that she is a female.

The performance was located in a high school; in the corridors, lunch hall, principal's office, classroom, the school bus and in the basketball court outside. It has a range of people dancing from the little kids, teenagers and adult dancers.

The chirography was performed in unison in big groups and small groups (with the three little girls) demonstrating jumps

Themes

The theme in this video is Adidas tracksuits from all different colours: blue and yellow. brown and red. The theme also a high school

Special effects

This video had one key special effect of where the section where Missy Elliott was in the classroom where the colours changed in all different types. Like, there was an orange background but their skin appeared green

Case Study 1: Beyonce- Formation

Beyonce - Formation Music Video

Genre,/Style, Content and Role of Performance

The Genre of this song 'Formation - Beyonce'  is almost a mixture of Hip Hop and Pop (Hip Hop Pop) because its very mainstream with an upbeat feel but with an very urban sound of that you would stereo-typically hear in a Rap video/song.

Synopsize the Video: Conceptual

This music video was generally made to make an awareness of police brutality and how injustice has risen in America in today's society. It was also based on Black Lives Matter and Black Excellence in which why Beyonce and her team have captivated very well where she had an all black cast including her daughter Blue Ivy. Showing and representing the creative and empowering side of black history through dance, singing and standing up for black rights (as shown where the black little boy puts his hands up in front of a row of policemen in the video). Right after that, there was a memorable shot of a graffiti on the wall saying 'Stop Shooting US' referring to those black females and males that have died due to police brutality. For instance, Sandra Bland, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner and many many more. Also the use of huge afros and cornrows holds a huge place in the black society for many years and yet Beyonce was able to embrace it even through the hard times of inequality of black people where Black Panther emerged. Beyonce simply used her platform to reinforce police brutality not anti-police. This was truly Beyonce's first ever music video/song that she has made that related to Black Lives Matter in general.

Themes and Motifs

The theme of the video changed throughout the video. Some of the themes displayed showing different eras in the urban times. The main colours used (particularly on costumes) were red, white and blue. Obviously representing the American Flag mainly because that is what the video is representing and based on. The significant colour that is in the video is black. The negative connotations of black is death, dangerous and mystery. However, the positive connotations are power elegance and formaility, which could symbolise hope and faith knowing that America will be able to show that Black Lives actually do Matter.

Representation of Artist

Being that Beyonce has great resume of producing music videos that not just empowers women but is always good to watch. This video not as different as to her other previous videos but mainly because she was empowering the black community as well as being proud of where she comes from. In the 'Formation' video she played a lot characteristics in each scene.  In the scene where she is seen very historical, classy outfit all in white, she seems very classy, elegant and posed because that is a clear representation of what you'll see a women act like in a historical wealthy times. Having her leg crossed and head held high were also clear position of what she displaying. However, in the scene where she's all dressed in denim and dancing with her back up dancers, she seems more energetic and rough showing a whole different contrast of eras through the decades.

Target Audience

The primary target audience for the video seems to be for all American citizens (black, white, asian, hispanics) then the secondary audience would be non- american citizens. All genders and ages.
